What is a Spirit Tree?

Sister Hannah Cahoon (1788-1864) of Hancock Shaker Village, Massachusetts, received a vision that inspired her "spirit drawing" of the Tree of Life. Spirit drawings, also known as gift drawings, were a means of teaching the younger generation about the early Shakers and their Founder, Mother Ann Lee.

The Shakers selected the Tree of Life as a symbol of their church and their devotion to hope, wisdom, understanding, and peace.

Historic House Plaques

Every home in Shaker Heights is special! Celebrate the year your house was constructed with a commemorative bronze plaque. You can choose to include the name of your architect (if you know it) or just the year it was permitted. Up to you!
