The Shaker Historical Society is a non-profit organization, established in 1947 to provide stewardship for our region’s significant history.

Early Settlers and Warrensville Township
Warrensville Township was established in 1814. The first permanent settler in Warrensville Township was Daniel Warren.
The Shakers
The Shaker movement in America was characterized by communal living, celibacy, confession of sins, pacifism, belief in the equality of all people, and daily living designed to bring about the Kingdom of Heaven on earth.
The Development of Shaker Heights
In 1906, entrepreneurs O.P. and M.J. Van Sweringen developed Shaker Village, later called Shaker Heights, as one of the first “Garden City” suburbs in this country.
