Mother Ann Lee, born in Manchester England, is recognized as the founder of the Shakers. Her arrival in America in 1774 laid the foundation for establishing ninteen Shaker colonies throughout the East and Midwest. The North Union Shaker settlement (1822-1889) was located in what is now known as Shaker Heights, Ohio.

Today the Shakers are remembered for their successful farming methods, finely crafted oval boxes, creative inventions and beautifully designed furniture. They left an even greater legacy of a simple lifestyle, rich in concepts of equality, freedom and social justice.
